Overview

This advanced course is designed to teach hunters and precision shooters how to execute accurate and ethical shots at extended distances, typically beyond 400 yards and often out to 800–1,000+ yards, while maintaining strict safety standards and real-world accountability. The curriculum bridges traditional hunting marksmanship with modern precision rifle techniques, helping students understand equipment limitations, environmental variables, and personal capability so that only responsible, high-probability shots are taken. The course can also be tailored to support competitors preparing for NRL Hunter–style matches.

Target Audience

• Precision rifle competitors (PRS, NRL, ELR)
• Long-range hunters seeking to increase capability while ensuring ethical harvest
• Tactical, law enforcement, or military marksmen advancing into extended-range engagements

Prerequisites:
Demonstrated proficiency in rifle fundamentals is required. A match-grade rifle and ammunition, familiarity with ballistic solvers such as Applied Ballistics or Kestrel integration, and prior completion of an intermediate or advanced long-range course are strongly recommended.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Generate and validate precise ballistic data across extended distances
• Read and compensate for complex wind patterns, including mirage, terrain effects, and vertical components
• Execute accurate shots from alternate and field-expedient positions
• Perform advanced ranging, target identification, and unknown-distance engagements
• Work effectively in shooter-spotter pairs or small teams for data confirmation and corrections

Course Outline

Day 1 – Advanced Ballistics and Data Validation

• Review of internal, external, and terminal ballistics
• Precision chronograph use, muzzle velocity analysis, and ballistic solver truing
• Building and verifying DOPE from 100 yards out to 1,760+ yards (one mile and beyond)
• Environmental effects including Coriolis, spin drift, aerodynamic jump, and density altitude extremes
• Advanced optic application including reticle holds, dialing precision, and turret tracking verification
• Live fire focused on zero confirmation and data collection

Day 2 – Wind Reading and Environmental Compensation

• Advanced wind reading techniques including mirage interpretation and wind layering
• Real-time wind calling drills using Kestrel or anemometer integration
• Terrain-driven wind effects such as channeling, updrafts, downdrafts, and transonic instability
• Live-fire distance progression from approximately 800 yards to 1,500+ yards under varying conditions

Required Equipment (Student Provided)

• Precision rifle capable of sub-MOA accuracy at extended distances, preferably in high-BC calibers
• High-magnification optic with exposed turrets and mil-based reticle
• Quality rangefinder and Kestrel weather meter or equivalent. A ballistic solver app may be used in place of a Kestrel
• Match-grade ammunition, 100–200+ rounds from a consistent lot
• Spotting scope or binoculars, tripod, bipod, rear bag, shooting mat, and data book
• Field-appropriate gear for prone and alternate positions
• Eye and ear protection
